About Us

The Jamaica Nurses Group of New York is a 501 {c}{3} professional organization dedicated to health education, health promotion and wellness to people particularly in Jamaica and the United States. The Group was formed in 1962 by the late Mrs. Ivy Albarus. Two founding members remain active: Mrs. Lena Wynter and Dr. Marilyn Parker.

Membership: Open to Registered and Licensed Practical Nurses of Jamaican heritage in the five boroughs of New York City.  Application and dues for initial membership and annual dues for active membership are required.

Meetings: Held the last Tuesday of each month, except August and December
Venue: The Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church – 3114 Glenwood Road, Brooklyn, New York 11210
Time: 7:00 p.m-9:00 pm.

Mission

  • Care for the sick and disabled
  • Provide a medium of communication for Jamaican nurses residing in the United States of America
  • Provide opportunities for professional and cultural growth for its members
  • Provide opportunities to facilitate nursing education
  • Promote health education in the community
  • Contribute to charitable organizations and disaster relief efforts
  • Provide a spirit of comradeship among its members
  • Facilitate contact with fraternal and other organizations

Activities

  • Monetary donations for disaster relief: Haiti earthquake, Japan tsunami, and Mustard Seed Home for children in Jamaica
  • Donate medical supplies and equipment to hospitals in Jamaica
  • Award 1-2 scholarships annually to nursing students of Jamaican heritage
  • Conduct annual community health fair
  • Conduct blood pressure screenings at community events
  • Lead the nursing component of the Jamaica 2030 Healthcare Vision
  • Donate clothing and other supplies to children, nursing home residents and homeless shelters
  • Plan and coordinate health seminars for the Jamaica North-East Diaspora health sector
  • Participate at the Nurses Association of Jamaica {NAJ} annual conference
  • Serve as liaison between the Ministry of Health, hospitals in Jamaica and Friends of Jamaica in the U.S.
  • Collect and donate nursing text books to the Nursing Council and the University of Technology in Jamaica
  • Present health topics at community events and radio programs by invitation
  • Monetary donation to the University of the West Indies Scholarship fund for nursing student
  • Attend the Caribbean American Nurses Association {CANA} monthly meetings
  • Attend the Caribbean Nurses Organization {CNO} biennial conference in various islands
  • Participate in medical missions
